I have become restless due to onion burning: Commerce Minister

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has said that he has become restless due to onion burning. He made the remarks at a program titled 'Bangladesh's 50 Years of Agricultural Transformation and Achievement' at a hotel in the capital on Sunday.

The minister said, "It has become difficult to control the market due to lack of accurate statistics on food production and consumption." He talks about onions. I have become restless due to onion burning. There is a problem with statistics. We need 24-25 lakh tons of onions. The production is also 25-26 lakh tons. Then why import? That is the question. In that case, the statement is that about 20 percent of our onions are wasted. '

The country's onions have been declining since September-October, he said. In this case, we are 90 percent dependent on India. If India shuts down or raises prices, it will have an impact on the market. '

Addressing the agriculturists, Tipu Munshi said, "You bring onion seeds so that we can get onions in September-October. If production is increased and losses are reduced, there will be no problem in the onion market in the next 3-4 years.

The minister added, "Last year, the agriculture ministry estimated that 15 million tonnes of potatoes would be produced." And we eat 70-75 lakh tons of potatoes. That means there will be a potato surplus. But last year's market picture doesn't say that. Last year, the price of potato was 40 rupees. On the way out of the cold storage, the potato became 35-36 rupees, the potato was not exported. That means there is a mess. Either the production of potatoes has decreased or the demand for potatoes has increased.

State Minister for Planning was the special guest. Shamsul Alam, FAO Bangladesh Country Representative Robert D. Simpson and USAID Bangladesh Mission Director Katherine Stevens.
