Mandapa attack: Provocative Islamic speaker arrested


The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police has arrested an Islamic speaker named Maula Abdur Rahim Biplobi on charges of inciting an attack on a Durga Puja shrine in Comilla. He was arrested on Thursday morning.


CID Additional Special Superintendent of Police Mohammad Azad confirmed the matter. He said that Mawla Abdur Rahim Biplobi (39) had given a provocative speech in a waz mahfil on the day of receiving the Holy Quran at the Puja Mandap in Comilla.


Besides, he has also made various statements about the incident in Chandpur after the incident in Comilla. These statements spread through social media. He added that he was arrested from Keraniganj in Dhaka this morning after the matter came to the notice of the CID's cyber monitoring cell.


Earlier, on October 13, a temple was attacked and vandalized at the Nanua Dighirpar Pujamandap in Comilla. In this incident, 891 people were accused in eight cases in different police stations.


Of these, five cases have been registered in Kotwali Model Police Station, two in Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station and one in Daudkandi Police Station. Mentioning the names of 91 people, 700 people have been made unidentified accused in the case. So far, police have arrested 44 people.


As news of the incident in Comilla spread, places of worship were vandalized in several districts including Chandpur and Chittagong. In Chandpur, there were incidents of clashes between the protesters and the police.
